Success stories often celebrate the finish line; the billion-ringgit brands, packed stores and industry awards. But what they rarely show are the moments when everything falls apart.
For Bryan Loo, one of Malaysia’s most recognised entrepreneurs, that moment came in 2017. After years of building Chatime into the country’s leading bubble tea chain with more than 160 outlets, the franchise agreement was terminated following a dispute with the Taiwanese parent company. Overnight, the business he had spent years growing was gone.
For many entrepreneurs, it would have marked the end of the story. For Bryan Loo, it was simply the beginning of a new chapter.
When Life Hands You an Empty Cup

Every entrepreneur dreams of building something lasting. Few ever imagine having to start over from scratch.
Instead of dwelling on what was lost, Bryan Loo focused on what remained his team, his experience and the trust he had built with customers.
In less than 50 days, he transformed more than 160 former Chatime outlets into Tealive, introducing an entirely new Malaysian brand. It was one of the fastest large-scale rebranding exercises the country’s food and beverage industry had ever witnessed.
It wasn’t just a change of logo or store colour. It was a bold declaration that setbacks don’t have to define your future.
Building a Brand, Not Just Selling Drinks
Bryan Loo never wanted Tealive to be “just another bubble tea shop.”
From the beginning, he envisioned a lifestyle brand that could constantly evolve with changing consumer tastes. That meant introducing innovative drinks, seasonal flavours, collaborations with well-known brands and new store concepts that kept customers coming back for more.
Today, Tealive has grown into Southeast Asia’s largest lifestyle tea brand, with more than 800 outlets across Malaysia and an expanding presence in countries including Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar and the Philippines.
What began as a comeback story has become one of Malaysia’s biggest homegrown F&B success stories.
The Entrepreneur Who Saw Opportunity in Crisis

Bryan Loo often says entrepreneurship isn’t about avoiding problems; it’s about solving them.
Long before Tealive, his entrepreneurial spirit appeared most unexpectedly. As a primary school student in Perlis, he drew comic books, rented them to classmates and later sold stationery and collectables, earning his first RM1,000 while still in Standard One.
Although he graduated with a degree in biotechnology and worked in the biotech industry, his heart was always set on building a business of his own. Spotting a gap in Malaysia’s beverage market, he introduced Chatime in 2010, believing tea could become more than just a drink; it could become a lifestyle.
That same ability to recognise opportunities, even in uncertainty, would later help him create Tealive.
Leading Through Change
One of Bryan Loo’s greatest strengths isn’t simply innovation; it’s resilience. During the transition from Chatime to Tealive, his priority wasn’t just opening stores. It was protecting the people behind the business. More than 1,000 employees faced uncertainty, yet Bryan worked to reassure his workforce and ensure they could continue moving forward together.
His leadership reflects an important truth: great leaders don’t just rebuild businesses; they rebuild confidence. Today, Loob Holding has expanded beyond Tealive into brands such as Bask Bear Coffee and WonderBrew, proving that reinvention isn’t a one-time event but an ongoing mindset.
The Courage to Begin Again

Bryan Loo’s journey isn’t inspiring because he never failed. It’s inspiring because he refused to let failure write the final chapter.
His story reminds us that entrepreneurship isn’t measured by how smoothly the journey unfolds. It’s measured by the courage to adapt, the determination to keep moving and the confidence to begin again when others would choose to walk away.
Because sometimes, the most successful businesses aren’t built from perfect beginnings, they’re built from second chances. And perhaps that’s Bryan Loo’s greatest legacy: proving that every ending can become the start of something even greater.
Bryan Loo’s journey is a reminder that setbacks don’t define a leader; how they respond does. Across industries, there are leaders who have faced failure, embraced change, and emerged stronger through resilience and determination. The Leadership Excellence Award (LEA) honours these inspiring individuals whose courage to start again continues to create lasting impact.
