ZUS Coffee: The Leadership Behind Its Rapid Rise

Coffee is no longer just about what is inside the cup. For ZUS Coffee, it is about making speciality coffee more affordable, convenient and accessible through technology. Since launching in 2019, the Malaysian homegrown brand has grown from a small kiosk into a regional coffee chain with more than 1,000 outlets.

From the creamy Spanish Latté and bold CEO Latté to the locally inspired ZUS Gula Melaka and refreshing Matcha Latté, ZUS has built a menu that goes beyond traditional coffee. Its growing line-up of familiar favourites and creative flavours has helped turn the brand into more than just a place to grab a caffeine fix, it has become part of the everyday coffee culture. And behind that transformation is a leadership approach that saw coffee not simply as a beverage, but as an opportunity to rethink price, technology, convenience and customer experience.

The Founders Who Saw Coffee Differently

Behind the brand are entrepreneurs Ian Chua and Venon Tian, who approached the coffee business with a different mindset.

Instead of simply creating another café chain, they focused on making speciality coffee an everyday habit. ZUS built its proposition around affordable coffee, summed up by its philosophy: “Necessity, not a Luxury.”

Its first outlet at Binjai 8 was deliberately compact, with an emphasis on takeaway and delivery rather than a large café experience. The goal was simple: good coffee, served efficiently and at a price customers could return to regularly.

That simplicity became one of the brand’s greatest strengths.

Technology Was Part of the Recipe

One of ZUS’s biggest differences was its decision to put technology at the heart of the business from the beginning.

The ZUS app connected ordering, payment, pickup and delivery, making the coffee-buying experience faster and more convenient. More importantly, it allowed the brand to understand customer preferences and behaviour.

For the founders, technology was not simply about keeping up with trends. It was about solving a very ordinary problem: how can people get their coffee more easily?

That thinking helped ZUS build a business around the customer’s routine, rather than simply around its physical outlets.

Making Coffee More Accessible

ZUS also challenged the idea that speciality coffee had to come with a premium price tag. By focusing on affordability while maintaining its speciality coffee positioning, the brand created a proposition that appealed to consumers looking for quality without making coffee an occasional splurge. It was a clever shift in perspective.

Instead of asking customers to visit a café for a special coffee experience, ZUS made the coffee itself part of the everyday lifestyle.

Growth With a Bigger Vision

The founders’ ambition did not stop at building a large Malaysian coffee chain.

ZUS reached its 1,000th outlet in 2025 and has continued expanding beyond Malaysia, including into the Philippines and Thailand. The brand has also moved beyond cafés into products such as ready-to-drink and instant coffee.

This reflects a broader leadership mindset: don’t just grow the business; keep finding new ways for the brand to become relevant.

The question is no longer simply how many outlets ZUS can open, but where else the brand can fit into consumers’ everyday lives.

The Leadership Brew

The rise of ZUS Coffee offers a simple but powerful lesson in modern leadership. Ian Chua and Venon Tian did not reinvent coffee. They reinvented the way coffee could be delivered, experienced and positioned. They combined technology with convenience, affordability with quality and a local idea with regional ambition.

From one small kiosk to more than 1,000 outlets, ZUS shows that innovation does not always begin with creating something completely new.

Sometimes, it begins by looking at something familiar and asking: “Why does it have to be done this way?” For ZUS, that question changed the way Malaysians drink coffee and brewed a business with ambitions far beyond the cup.

ZUS Coffee demonstrates how strategic leadership can combine technology, accessibility, and innovation to create a distinctive market presence. Its journey highlights the importance of leaders who understand emerging consumer needs and translate them into scalable ideas.
