Habib Jewels: The Family Legacy Behind Malaysia’s Jewellery Icon

Jewellery has long been more than something to wear. It can mark a promise, celebrate a milestone or carry a family story from one generation to another. Behind every sparkling piece is often a story, and for HABIB, that story has been unfolding for more than six decades.

Step into the world of HABIB and you will find more than diamonds, gold and gemstones. You will find a legacy that dates back to 1958, when Datuk Haji Habib Mohamed Abdul Latif opened his first jewellery shop in Penang. More than six decades later, the brand continues to evolve across generations, proving that a lasting business is built not only on beautiful products, but on trust, vision and the willingness to embrace change.

From a Small Shop to a Sparkling Idea

The HABIB story began with its late founder, Datuk Haji Habib Mohamed Abdul Latif, who opened his first jewellery store on Penang’s Pitt Street, then known as the city’s “Jeweller’s Corner”. He started with just RM3,800 in capital, but what he lacked in scale, he made up for with a sharp understanding of customers. There was one particularly bold decision that helped set HABIB apart.

At a time when gold was the mainstay of the jewellery trade, Habib chose to focus on diamonds and precious gemstones. Rather than simply following what everyone else was selling, he looked for a different space in the market. And it worked.

The business gradually developed a reputation for distinctive jewellery, while its clientele expanded beyond Penang. HABIB also began creating pieces that combined traditional Malaysian influences with jewellery craftsmanship, including kerongsang, baju Melayu buttons and long necklaces.

It was an early lesson in entrepreneurship: sometimes, standing out starts with the courage to do something slightly differently.

But Habib had another philosophy that proved even more valuable than any gemstone: trust.

In the jewellery business, where customers are buying pieces of significant value, reputation matters. According to HABIB, its founder believed strongly in honesty and integrity, values that became central to the family’s approach to business.

Every family business eventually faces the same question: How do you preserve what made the company special while preparing it for a completely different future?

For HABIB, that responsibility passed to founder Habib Mohamed’s son, Dato’ Sri Meer Sadik Habib.

Meer had grown up around the business, spending time at his father’s store after school and learning the trade from the ground up. He later studied business administration in the United States and obtained a gemology qualification from the Gemological Institute of America before returning to Malaysia in 1986. He came home with more than qualifications. He came home with ideas.

One of his biggest moves was shifting HABIB from primarily a wholesale operation towards retail. In 1986, the company opened its first Kuala Lumpur outlet at Semua House. But even the store itself was designed to challenge convention.

Instead of hiding the jewellery behind the metal grilles commonly seen in jewellery shops at the time, HABIB created a more open, gallery-style environment where customers could interact with the products more freely.

Meer also recognised the power of marketing. HABIB invested heavily in advertising and became one of the first local jewellers to use mass media and billboards to build its brand. The company’s first retail store in Kuala Lumpur eventually helped turn the surrounding Masjid India area into an important jewellery district.

In 1998, HABIB reached another milestone when it became Malaysia’s first publicly listed jeweller. The business was no longer simply a family jewellery shop in Penang. It was becoming a national brand.

Keeping Tradition Alive While Looking Ahead

Perhaps the most fascinating part of HABIB’s story is that its evolution did not mean leaving its heritage behind. Instead, the family continued looking for ways to make jewellery relevant to changing generations.

HABIB has built its own collections while also bringing international jewellery and lifestyle names to Malaysian consumers. Its portfolio has included brands such as Pandora, Stephen Webster and Hearts On Fire, alongside ventures such as TimeZone and Chantique, which focuses on pre-loved jewellery. And then there are the pieces that showcase what the brand can do when jewellery becomes art.

In 2001, HABIB created a jewelled replica of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, weighing six kilograms and featuring 1,206 diamonds, 121 blue topaz, 20 pink sapphires, pearls and lemon quartz. The spectacular creation earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records. It is a fitting symbol of the brand itself: deeply Malaysian, but never afraid to think bigger.

Today, HABIB continues to operate as a multi-generational family business, with the founder’s values still shaping the company while newer generations contribute to its future direction. And perhaps that is the real sparkle behind the brand.

Diamonds may catch the light, but trust is what keeps customers coming back. From a small shop on Penang’s Pitt Street to a nationally recognised jewellery house, HABIB demonstrates that building a lasting brand is not simply about chasing the next trend. It is about knowing what should never change, and having the courage to change everything else. For the Habib family, jewellery may be the product. But legacy is the real masterpiece.

Habib Jewels demonstrates how generational leadership can sustain a brand while enabling it to evolve with changing markets and consumer expectations. Its journey highlights the importance of continuity, innovation, and values-driven leadership. The Leadership Excellence Award (LEA) recognises individuals who create enduring organisational value and build legacies for future generations. Nominate a deserving leader today.
