From warehouse administrator to entrepreneur, a journey built on determination, continuous learning and the belief that sustainable business growth begins with people. RM7,000 was never meant to be the destination. It was the starting point.
For Lee Chee Koon, founder of Sunbright Auto Parts Supply Sdn Bhd, that modest investment in 2011 marked the beginning of an entrepreneurial journey shaped by perseverance, reinvestment, continuous learning and a determination to build something greater. What began as a small business has since grown into an automotive parts supply company with four outlets, serving customers across Peninsular and East Malaysia.
Lee’s journey in the automotive air-conditioning industry began on 4 December 1999, after completing his SPM examinations. Starting as a warehouse administrator before progressing into sales, he gained valuable experience in inventory management, product knowledge, customer relationships and the daily realities of running a business. More than a decade later, in 2011, he took the leap from employee to entrepreneur.

With only RM7,000 in start-up capital, Lee invested in his first inventory and began building the business through a straightforward approach: buy, sell, reinvest and repeat. Limited financial resources, tight cash flow, manpower challenges, inventory management and regulatory requirements made the early years demanding.
Rather than allowing these challenges to define his limitations, Lee treated them as opportunities to learn, adapt and become a stronger business owner.
Along the journey, his wife, Ivy, has played an important role as his partner in managing and developing the company. Her involvement in business operations and the shared commitment to Sunbright’s long-term growth have provided valuable support throughout the company’s development.
Headquartered in Klang, Selangor, Sunbright specialises in the wholesale distribution of automotive air-conditioning parts. Its extensive product range includes compressors, condensers, evaporators, blower motors, air-conditioning switches, cabin air filters, aluminium pipes and related automotive components. The company serves automotive air-conditioning workshops, spare-parts retailers, distributors and other customers throughout Malaysia. Beyond supplying products, Sunbright aims to provide reliable customer service, product knowledge, after-sales support and efficient delivery solutions.
For Lee, building a successful business involves more than increasing sales or expanding the number of outlets. He believes that operational efficiency, service quality and a capable team are equally important to sustainable growth. This philosophy is reflected in Sunbright’s emphasis on responding promptly to customer enquiries, providing accurate quotations, verifying product requirements and ensuring that orders are followed through carefully from confirmation to delivery.
Internally, Lee places strong importance on employee development, teamwork, clear operating procedures and accountability. Digital tools and structured systems are increasingly being introduced to improve productivity, reduce avoidable mistakes and enable employees to work with greater confidence and independence.

Having experienced the challenges of being an employee himself, Lee understands that people are motivated by different needs, including income, recognition, opportunities for development and a sense of belonging. He believes that effective leadership means understanding employees while setting clear expectations and helping them grow.
Sunbright’s guiding mission reflects this belief: “Create happiness for employees, create value for customers.”
The company’s culture is built around five core values: speed, efficiency, gratitude, healthy competition and cleanliness with organisation. These principles encourage employees to take responsibility, support one another, strive for continuous improvement and develop the discipline to complete today’s responsibilities without unnecessary delay.
To Lee, a positive working environment and disciplined execution should go hand in hand. Continuous learning has also played a defining role in his personal development as an entrepreneur.
Since 2018, Lee has invested more than RM300,000 in business education and professional training, seeking knowledge and practical approaches that can be adapted to his company’s needs. Rather than pursuing knowledge for its own sake, he believes that learning should lead to action. His approach is to put ideas into practice, evaluate the results, make necessary adjustments and continue improving. For him, taking action does not mean compromising on quality. It means moving forward with purpose, checking the results and refining the process.
Looking ahead, Lee has set an ambitious vision for Sunbright: to serve more than 10,000 automotive workshops across Malaysia by 2030. To support this ambition, the company aims to strengthen its digital capabilities, expand its online business presence, improve inventory and distribution efficiency, and explore opportunities in international markets.
Another important part of Lee’s long-term vision is to establish a modern, well-organised warehousing and operations centre. The proposed centre would enhance inventory management, order fulfilment and distribution efficiency while providing employees with a safer, cleaner and more comfortable working environment.
Ultimately, Lee does not see business growth as simply opening more outlets or achieving higher sales figures. His ambition is to build an organisation supported by capable people, reliable systems, strong customer relationships and a culture that can continue growing beyond the founder’s daily involvement.
From warehouse administrator to salesperson and eventually entrepreneur, Lee’s journey is a reminder that success does not necessarily begin with abundant resources. It begins with the willingness to learn, the courage to act and the determination to improve. For Lee Chee Koon and Sunbright Auto Parts, the journey remains a work in progress, driven by the same principles that started it all: perseverance, gratitude, continuous improvement and the belief that lasting success is built together.
