What better way to celebrate Malaysia’s 69th Independence Day than with stories about the people, struggles, sacrifices and dreams that shaped the nation?
And no, a Merdeka movie marathon does not have to mean watching the same historical battle for the hundredth time. Malaysian cinema has given us everything from legendary soldiers and anti-colonial fighters to football heroes and elite military units.
Here are some of the Malaysian patriotic and historical films currently available on major streaming platforms in Malaysia, arranged chronologically.
1981 — Bukit Kepong

Long before CGI-heavy war films, Bukit Kepong showed that Malaysian cinema could deliver a genuinely intense battlefield story.
Directed by and starring the late Jins Shamsuddin, the film dramatises the 1950 Bukit Kepong incident, when police officers and residents fought Communist insurgents at the Bukit Kepong police station in Johor. The film was released in 1981 and later digitally restored.

2000 — Leftenan Adnan

2007 — 1957: Hati Malaya

Directed by Shuhaimi Baba, 1957: Hati Malaya chronicles the journey towards the independence of Malaya and brings historical figures and events surrounding the birth of the nation to the big screen. Astro currently lists it for viewing on Astro GO.
It is perhaps the closest thing on this list to a cinematic history lesson except thankfully, there is no exam at the end.
Best for: Anyone who wants to revisit how the nation arrived at that unforgettable moment in 1957.
2016 — OlaBola

Not every national story needs guns, uniforms and battlefields.
Sometimes, all you need is a football.
Set against Malaysia’s football glory days of the 1970s, OlaBola follows a multicultural group of footballers chasing their dream while dealing with personal struggles and setbacks. The film was inspired by Malaysia’s real sporting history and became one of the country’s most beloved local sports films.
And there is a reason it works so well as a Merdeka watch: its biggest message is not really about football. It is about unity.
Disney+ added OlaBola to its Malaysian content offering following the expanded Astro–Disney+ collaboration announced in June 2026.

2018 — PASKAL: The Movie

PASKAL takes audiences into the world of Malaysia’s elite naval special forces. Inspired by the Royal Malaysian Navy’s PASKAL unit and based around real events, the film follows an elite operative caught between a dangerous mission and personal battles. Netflix currently lists the film in its Malaysian catalogue.
It is fast, explosive and very much a “Malaysia boleh” kind of movie.
Best for: Action fans who want their Merdeka celebration with a side of explosions.
2018 — Pulang
Watch on: Netflix
Merdeka is not only about battles. It is also about leaving, longing and finding your way home.
Pulang follows a Malaysian sailor who leaves home in search of a better future, only for decades to pass before his family discovers what happened to him. The story moves across generations and continents, making it a more emotional and romantic take on Malaysian history.
The film was also significant for Malaysian cinema because it became the first Malay-language Netflix Original film released globally.
Best for: A quieter Merdeka night, preferably with tissues nearby.
2022 — Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan

Before Malaysia had a flag, people were fighting for their land.
Mat Kilau takes audiences back to Pahang during the resistance against British colonial rule, following the legendary warrior and his struggle to defend his homeland.
The film became a box-office phenomenon and was later released internationally on Netflix on Malaysia Day in 2022. Netflix continues to list it among its Malaysian films.
Best for: Those who want their Merdeka viewing loud, dramatic and unapologetically patriotic.
2022 — Air Force The Movie: Selagi Bernyawa

This military action film follows PASKAU personnel who are sent on a rescue mission after a Malaysian aircraft is shot down in a conflict zone. The Malaysian Air Force must then mount an operation to bring the survivors home. Netflix Malaysia promoted the film as part of its streaming catalogue.
It is a modern reminder that defending a country is not always about fighting a war at home. Sometimes, it is about bringing Malaysians safely home.

2023 — MALBATT: Misi Bakara

MALBATT: Misi Bakara dramatises the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu and the role of Malaysian peacekeepers in helping rescue US Rangers trapped in Somalia. The film was one of Malaysia’s major box-office releases of 2023 and is now available on Netflix.

2024 — Warrior Awang and Master Tok Gajah

2024 — Conquer: Lahad Datu

Merdeka stories do not always have to look backwards.
Conquer: Lahad Datu brings audiences closer to a much more recent chapter in Malaysian history, the 2013 Lahad Datu conflict in Sabah and the efforts of Malaysian security forces during the crisis.
The film became one of Netflix Malaysia’s most-streamed movies in 2024, ranking sixth among the platform’s most-streamed movies in Malaysia that year.
