How a Toll Card Became Malaysia’s Digital Wallet

There was a time when the words “Touch ’n Go” immediately meant one thing: tolls.

For Malaysians, the familiar card was once a small but significant symbol of convenience: tap, beep, and go. Today, however, Touch ’n Go means far more than getting through a highway toll.

From transportation and parking to QR payments, financial services and travel, the homegrown brand has evolved alongside the way Malaysians live, work and move. And that evolution is a story of knowing when to keep moving forward.

It Started With a Tap

Touch ’n Go’s journey began in the 1990s, when cashless payments were still a relatively new concept.

The first Touch ’n Go card was introduced in 1997, providing motorists with a faster way to pay highway tolls. A few years later, SmartTAG arrived, followed by the expansion of Touch ’n Go into public transport and parking. By 2011, the card had been adopted across Malaysia’s highways.

The lesson was simple: solve a real problem, and people will make room for you in their daily lives.

Then Came the Digital Leap

The biggest turning point came in 2017, when Touch ’n Go entered the fintech space and partnered with Ant Group to form TNG Digital.

The Touch ’n Go eWallet subsequently transformed the brand from a physical payment card into a digital platform. It was a bold move because the brand was entering a completely different arena. But instead of leaving its roots behind, Touch ’n Go built upon them.

Tolls evolved with RFID and PayDirect. The card gained NFC capabilities. The eWallet expanded into QR payments, parking, bills, transfers, travel and financial services. In other words, Touch ’n Go stopped being just something Malaysians used on the road; it started becoming something they used throughout the day.

More Than Just Payments

Perhaps the most interesting part of Touch ’n Go’s transformation is what happened beyond payments.

The TNG eWallet has expanded into areas such as investment, lending, insurance, remittance, rewards and travel. In June 2026, TNG Digital announced that its eWallet had surpassed 26 million verified users, with 13.5 million Malaysians actively using the app each month.

That is a remarkable shift from its original identity as a toll-payment solution. The brand has effectively moved from “How do I pay?” to “What else can I do?” That is where modern brands separate themselves from the pack.

A Brand That Grew With Malaysia

Touch ’n Go’s story is also a reflection of Malaysia’s own digital transformation.

As consumers became more comfortable with cashless payments, the brand expanded. As smartphones became indispensable, the eWallet became more relevant. As Malaysians began expecting financial services to be faster and more accessible, Touch ’n Go ventured further into fintech.

Its latest ecosystem now spans mobility, payments, financial services and lifestyle needs. The group reported more than 35 million active Touch ’n Go cards, four million registered RFID tags, over 2,000 parking sites and more than 24 million verified TNG eWallet users in its 2025 Sustainability Impact Report.

The numbers are impressive, but perhaps the bigger achievement is simpler: Touch ’n Go has become part of the rhythm of Malaysian life.

The Road Ahead

Brands do not remain relevant simply because people remember them. They remain relevant because they continue to earn a place in people’s routines.

Touch ’n Go understood this early. Its journey from a humble toll card to a broader digital ecosystem shows that innovation does not always mean starting from scratch. Sometimes, it means taking something familiar and asking: “What more can this become?”

For a Malaysian brand that started with a simple tap, the journey ahead could be anything but ordinary. After all, the name has always said it best: Touch. And go.

Touch ’n Go’s journey shows how a simple solution can evolve into an everyday essential. Behind that transformation is leadership that understands changing consumer needs, embraces innovation, and thinks beyond the obvious.
