A Scoop of Courage: The Story Behind Inside Scoop

Some businesses begin with a detailed business plan. Others begin with a gap waiting to be filled.

For Malaysian homegrown ice-cream brand Inside Scoop, it began with something much simpler: a love for ice cream, a desire to create happy memories and a belief that Malaysians deserved something made closer to home.

Founded in 2013 by husband-and-wife duo Edmund Tan and Lim Shiew Li, Inside Scoop started with a simple ambition: to create fresh, premium ice cream locally, with flavours that spoke to Malaysian taste buds. More than a decade later, that small idea has grown into a familiar name with more than 70 scoop shops across Malaysia.

But the most interesting part of the story isn’t how many scoops they sell. It is how they got there.

They Saw the Gap and Took the Risk

When Inside Scoop began, the premium ice-cream market in Malaysia was largely dominated by international chains. Instead of seeing that as a reason to stay away, Tan and Shiew Li saw an opportunity.

Their answer was not to imitate what already existed. It was to create something distinctly their own, freshly made ice cream using quality ingredients, natural flavours and combinations inspired by Malaysian tastes, their travels and changing food trends.

That is one of the most valuable leadership lessons: opportunity does not always look like an open door. Sometimes, it looks like a crowded room where you have to find a different way to stand out.

You Don’t Need to Know Everything

Perhaps one of the most inspiring parts of the Inside Scoop story is that neither founder came from a formal culinary background.

They had plenty of experience eating ice cream and making it at home, but that was hardly the same as mastering the science behind it.

Instead of allowing that knowledge gap to become a limitation, Shiew Li went to Gelato University in Italy to learn more about the craft and science of ice cream.

It is a powerful reminder for leaders at every stage of their careers: expertise is not always where you start; sometimes, it is what you choose to build.

The willingness to say “I don’t know yet” can be more valuable than pretending to know everything.

From 16 Flavours to a Malaysian Favourite

Inside Scoop’s first outlet opened in Bangsar in late 2013 with just 16 flavours, including Durian and Valrhona Chocolate. Its second outlet followed in Damansara Jaya in July 2014.

Today, the brand has expanded dramatically, while continuing to experiment with flavours that go far beyond the conventional.

Teh Tarik, for example, was reportedly created simply because the team was craving it. Other unusual experiments have included wasabi and lemongrass peppermint,  proof that innovation sometimes begins with nothing more complicated than curiosity.

That playful willingness to experiment is a leadership lesson in itself. Not every idea has to work. But every idea can teach you something.

Perhaps Inside Scoop’s biggest strength is its ability to make something familiar feel new.

Ice cream is universal. But Malaysian flavours give it personality.

In 2026, as part of Visit Malaysia 2026, Inside Scoop introduced its “Rasa-Rasa Malaysia” collection, featuring six flavours inspired by different parts of the country, from Kuala Lumpur and Melaka to Johor, Kelantan, Pahang and Sarawak.

It is more than a clever flavour strategy. It shows how a brand can grow without losing sight of where it came from. For leaders, that matters.

Growth does not have to mean abandoning your identity. Sometimes, the strongest brands are the ones that take their roots with them as they grow.

The Bigger Lesson Behind the Scoop

Inside Scoop’s journey is ultimately not just about ice cream. It is about recognising an opportunity, learning what you don’t know, experimenting without fear and understanding the people you are creating for.

From two founders testing and churning flavours to a Malaysian brand with more than 70 scoop shops, the journey reflects a simple truth about leadership: big brands often begin with small acts of courage. And perhaps that is what makes the Inside Scoop story so relatable.

You don’t need to begin with a perfect recipe. You just need the courage to create one,  and the patience to keep improving it.

Inside Scoop started with a simple idea, but it took courage, persistence, and a willingness to do things differently to turn that idea into a brand. That same spirit lives in leaders who challenge the ordinary and create something people believe in.
