The design industry rewards ideas, but it also tests endurance. For Shawn Goh, building a career in the field has meant moving between creativity and commerce, independent work and collaboration, local clients and international platforms. Along the way, he has developed a philosophy centred on purposeful design, continuous learning and the belief that Malaysian creative talent deserves a wider audience.
As Co-founder and Creative Director of Shawn Goh Design Lab Sdn. Bhd., Shawn has developed a multidisciplinary creative practice spanning brand strategy, branding, packaging, product design, F&B projects, events and digital applications. His professional journey began after he graduated with a diploma in graphic design in 2011 and spent nine months at an advertising company before venturing independently. He initially worked as a freelancer before formally registering his enterprise in 2014.
Based in Muar, Johor, the company serves markets across the southern region, particularly Johor Bahru, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Its work extends beyond visual execution, supporting businesses with brand identities, packaging systems, brand guidelines, brand colours, rebranding strategies and product development. The studio also works on campaigns, event-related projects and digital applications.

International exposure has become an important part of the company’s development. Shawn has cited 27 awards since 2016, with its work exhibited in more than 10 countries, including Italy, China, Germany and the United States. Its recognised work includes a Silver MUSE Design Award for the G Forty Top 40 trophy, which interpreted leadership through the image of an angel with open wings, symbolising the ability to lead and chart a course, alongside a gesture of gratitude. The project was also recognised by the Chicago Athenaeum’s Good Design Awards.
Another recognised project, Who’s Ladies, received a Silver MUSE Design Award in Packaging Design. In contrast, The Taste of Heritage, a Malaysian instant coffee concept, received a Silver A’ Design Award for its packaging concept centred on Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.
Beyond his own projects, Shawn has developed a presence as a design juror, serving on the jury of the A’ Design Award and Competition and being featured as a juror for international platforms including MUSE Design Awards.
For Shawn, however, leadership ultimately comes down to execution. He believes leaders should communicate what they can deliver, understand their teams’ capabilities and lead by example. In a creative environment, he also places importance on understanding people, recognising that personal experiences can influence creative work.

This perspective is closely tied to his entrepreneurial outlook. Shawn believes perseverance is measured in years rather than months, while relationships, referrals and meaningful connections play an important role in building a sustainable creative business.
Looking ahead, he intends to strengthen his team and expand into areas including packaging, product development and ecological applications. At the same time, he wants to use international platforms to demonstrate the capabilities of Malaysian businesses and creative talent. For Shawn Goh Design Lab, the direction is clear: to build stronger brands, create meaningful design solutions and bring Malaysian creativity to a wider international audience.
