Long before Ayamas became a familiar name in Malaysian kitchens, it was simply solving a very practical problem: how to keep KFC supplied with consistent, quality chicken.
And perhaps that is what makes its story so interesting. Ayamas did not begin with a grand plan to become a household name. It began behind the scenes, and then its leaders saw an opportunity to step into the spotlight.
From Supplying KFC to Building a Brand
The Ayamas story began in 1982, when KFC Food Processing Sdn Bhd established its original plant in Kuchai Lama, Selangor. Its job was straightforward: supply consistently sized, quality chicken and chicken-based products to KFC outlets across Malaysia.
But there was a catch. The processing operation could not sell every piece of chicken to KFC. The surplus had to find another market. That limitation eventually became an opportunity.
In 1988, the group moved into retail, establishing Ayamas Convenience Stores. A year earlier, construction had begun on its larger Port Klang processing plant, which became fully operational in 1988. By 1993, the company had formally taken the name Ayamas Food Corporation and subsequently became a listed company in 1994.
Among the figures associated with Ayamas’ early development was Dato’ George Ting Yew Tong, who is documented as a founder director of Ayamas Food Corporation and was instrumental in pioneering the Ayamas convenience-store concept.
But the next chapter would require a different kind of leadership: turning an established supplier into a brand people would actively choose.
The Leader Who Saw Beyond the Chicken
In 2001, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani joined Ayamas as Executive Director. In December 2002, at just 39, he was appointed Group Managing Director of both Ayamas Food Corporation and KFC Holdings Malaysia. His background was very different from the poultry business: he was an accountant who had begun his career with an international accounting firm before moving into senior corporate roles.
That background mattered.
Johari brought a numbers-and-strategy mindset to a business that had already built considerable operational expertise. His challenge was not simply to produce more chicken. It was to make Ayamas commercially bigger.
Contemporary reporting shows the ambition clearly. By 2003, Ayamas had expanded to 43 convenience stores, 14 kiosks and 30 Rasa Gourmet restaurants, while developing a growing portfolio of processed products including nuggets, sausages, meatballs and burgers.
The thinking had changed from: “How do we supply chicken?” to “How do we build a brand around what we know?”
That is the kind of leadership shift that can completely change the trajectory of a company.
When a Business Becomes Part of Everyday Life

That transformation is the real leadership lesson behind Ayamas.
Ayamas recognised changing urban lifestyles and the growing demand for convenient food. It invested in processing capabilities, product innovation, retail distribution and quality control. Its integrated approach, from poultry and processing to distribution, helped the business maintain consistency at scale.
Today, Ayamas says its Port Klang operation processes around 2.8 million birds a month, producing fresh and value-added products while maintaining Halal, HACCP, ISO and FSSC certifications. Its products are distributed across Malaysia and exported to markets including Singapore, Brunei, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other ASEAN markets.
From a processing plant supplying another famous brand to becoming a recognisable Malaysian name itself, Ayamas demonstrates a powerful principle of leadership:
Do not become so comfortable being the engine behind someone else’s success that you overlook the possibility of building something of your own. Ayamas started by supplying the market. Its leaders eventually realised they could own a place in it. And sometimes, that is where the real growth begins.
Behind a familiar brand is often a leadership story of decisions, challenges, and constant evolution. Ayamas is one example of how thoughtful leadership can shape a business and keep it relevant through changing times. The Leadership Excellence Award recognises the people behind such journeys.
